Arsenal Targets Guimaraes as Newcastle Pursues Froholdt

Away from the public noise, the player’s stance has given Arsenal encouragement that they can land their first major signing of the summer.

Reports elsewhere suggest Guimaraes has agreed personal terms on a five-year contract with the Gunners. That piece of the puzzle, it seems, is in place. Now comes the hard part: forcing Newcastle to sell the heartbeat of their midfield.

The expectation inside the market is that an agreement will be found in the coming days. Arsenal are pushing. Newcastle are resisting, but their next move hints at a club preparing for life after Guimaraes.

Newcastle turn to Froholdt

In Portugal, O Jogo report that Newcastle have made their first concrete move for Porto midfielder Victor Froholdt, contacting the Dane’s representatives to explore a transfer.

It is a calculated step. Newcastle have been knocked back publicly more than once over the past year, so this time they are sounding out the player’s interest before going anywhere near Porto with an official bid.

The problem? Froholdt has already said he wants to stay.

Fresh from being named Primeira Liga’s Player of the Season, the 25-year-old has repeatedly underlined his commitment to Porto and to the title fight ahead.

“People talk about taking the next step, but for me Porto is already a huge club,” he said recently. “I am focused on the next league match. I like being here. Now we are going all out for the championship.”

Those are not the words of a man agitating for a move. And Porto hold the strongest hand of all: a £73.4 million release clause that would make any deal expensive and complicated.

A delicate chain of deals

This is where the market tightens. For Arsenal to get Guimaraes, Newcastle need to be convinced they can adequately replace him. For Newcastle to prise Froholdt away, they must first turn his head, then confront Porto’s financial demands.
