Arsenal's Financial Balancing Act: Aliadiere's Insights on Transfers

Jeremie Aliadiere has warned Arsenal that the title glow and booming revenues cannot hide a simple reality: the books still have to balance.

The former Gunners forward, speaking to Metro via Football Betting, backed the club’s ambition but drew a hard line under the idea of another blockbuster outlay on a wide forward.

“Yes, we’re champions, yes, we’ve made a lot of money,” he said. “But at some point, you’ve got to balance the books as well.”

Arsenal have already gone big in recent windows and followed up the capture of Bruno Guimaraes with further heavy investment over the past year. In terms of significant income, only Leandro Trossard has departed for a fee. That equation, Aliadiere suggested, has to shape what happens next.

“When you think about the money that Arsenal already spent after [Bruno] Guimaraes’ arrival, what we’ve spent last year, plus we’ve only had Trossard leaving for money,” he said. “Only the club will know financially where they are, but will they be able to go and spend 150 million on a new winger, or is it maybe financially more reasonable to go for a lower option?”

That “lower option” might still be an established Premier League name. Aliadiere pointed straight at Chelsea’s Pedro Neto as the kind of signing that makes sporting and financial sense.

“Pedro Neto could be a great option,” he said. “He’s played in the Premier League for many years, is established, knows the league, a very, very good player.”

Neto’s numbers underline the point. Since arriving at Chelsea from Wolves in August 2024, he has scored 19 goals in 103 appearances, a consistent threat across multiple seasons and managers. Now his form has caught the eye of Enzo Maresca at City, adding another heavyweight suitor into the mix.

Chelsea, though, are not in a hurry to cash in. The problem is volume, not value. The London club are carrying a senior group of 41 players, a swollen squad that has forced manager Xabi Alonso to accept that outgoings are no longer optional.

Alonso did not address Neto specifically, but he did not sugar-coat the wider situation.

“I’m sure that from today to the last day of the transfer window there will be a lot of links, a lot of rumours, so to be commenting on all of them, it’s going to be a hard task,” he said. “But for sure, we need proper balance in terms of qualities, in terms of positions, in terms of balance. We want to have a complete squad and we want to make a good team.”

While Chelsea juggle who stays and who goes, Arsenal have their own balancing act. Aliadiere pointed out that the champions have already moved for Christos Tzolis, a natural left winger, which complicates the idea of splashing nine figures on another wide attacker.

“And don’t forget, we’ve already signed a left winger with Christos Tzolis,” he said. “He’s a left winger, so you’re just adding top talent.

“We’ve spent 40 million. You can’t just spend 40 million and then just stick him on the bench and never play him. So I think you’ve got to keep every option open and see what is best financially for the club.”

That is the crux of Arsenal’s summer: can a champion still act like a disciplined club, resisting the urge for another marquee winger, while rivals circle a proven Premier League attacker like Neto?
