Anthony Martial Set for Málaga Lifeline as Talks Advance

Anthony Martial is closing in on a surprise return to Spanish football, with Málaga in advanced talks to sign the out-of-contract striker, according to Santi Aouna of Foot Mercato.

The 30-year-old has been without a club for two months after his deal with Mexican side CF Monterrey was abruptly terminated in July, three years before its scheduled expiry in mid-2027. The reasons behind that decision remain unclear, but it left a once-electric forward drifting on the market at a critical stage of his career.

On Wednesday, Aouna reported on X that negotiations between Martial and Málaga are progressing well and that an agreement is “close.” For a player whose trajectory has nosedived in recent seasons, the Andalusian club could represent one of the last major platforms to revive his reputation.

Málaga’s gamble, Martial’s last stand?

Málaga, back in LaLiga after years in the wilderness, are in need of help. Promotion this summer brought optimism, but the reality of top-flight life has hit hard. They sit 18th in the table with just three points, already staring at a relegation battle unless the squad is strengthened quickly and decisively.

Martial, at his best, offers exactly what a struggling side craves: pace, unpredictability, and goals. The problem is, that version of Martial has rarely been seen in recent years.

From Athens to Mexico – and now back to Spain

After leaving England, Martial tried to rebuild in Europe with AEK Athens. On paper, nine goals was a respectable return, yet it was not enough to convince the Greek club to keep faith. They moved him on quickly, another sign of a player struggling to find a stable home.

Mexico came next. Monterrey offered a fresh start and a long-term contract through 2027. It lasted barely a season. Twenty matches, flashes of quality, but no sustained impact. Then, the termination.

Now comes Málaga. A club fighting to stay in LaLiga, a forward fighting to stay relevant at the top level. The stakes are obvious on both sides.

For Málaga, this is a calculated risk.
