Alvaro Arbeloa Signs Angel to Strengthen Fulham Midfield

Alvaro Arbeloa has gone back to what he knows best – and back to Valdebebas.

After opening his first Premier League campaign with two defeats, the Fulham head coach has dipped into Real Madrid’s talent pool once more, securing 22-year-old midfielder Angel on a deal that underlines both trust and familiarity.

Angel, who has signed a three-year contract with an option for a further 12 months, is no stranger to Arbeloa’s demands. The Spaniard captained Arbeloa’s Real Madrid Castilla side and later broke into the first team under the same coach when both were promoted mid-season.

From there, Angel collected four La Liga appearances and tasted Champions League football, a rapid rise that convinced Fulham he was ready for a bigger stage and a heavier workload.

Standard Sport understands the move is structured as an initial one-year loan that will automatically become permanent for £18.3m. The club have confirmed he will then sign a long-term deal, a clear signal that this is no short-term patch but a central piece of Arbeloa’s rebuild.

Angel has no doubts about the man in the dugout.

“I’ve known him for many years from the Real Madrid youth academy, and he’s a coach who brings out the best in players, gets the most out of each one and, most importantly, understands them,” he said. “Now, he’s going to be coaching me at a higher level, and I must give him the same intensity and commitment – or even more – than ever before.”

A new core for Fulham’s midfield

Fulham have been far more aggressive in this window than last. Angel follows Shea Charles and Real Madrid pair Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios through the door, a clear pattern of youth, technical quality and familiarity with Arbeloa’s methods.

Angel also arrives with a winning pedigree. Before his Real Madrid breakthrough, he lifted both the league and cup in Sweden with Malmo, experience that should stiffen a Fulham side trying to steady themselves after a stuttering start.

His profile points directly towards one outgoing name. The 22-year-old is effectively a replacement for Sasa Lukic, who left for Ipswich Town on a permanent deal earlier in the summer, and will be expected to bring energy, control and a sharper edge in possession.

“It’s a very proud moment for me and my family – I’m honoured to be here,” Angel said after signing.
