Alejandro Balde's Future: Manchester United Eye Barcelona Left-Back

Alejandro Balde’s time at Barcelona is sliding towards a breaking point, and clubs across Europe have taken notice. Manchester United are among those watching closely, with the Premier League side tracking the left-back after Barça gave his agent, Jorge Mendes, permission to find him a new club.

The first big clue came on Sunday night. Balde was left out of the squad for Barcelona’s clash with Elche at the Martinez Valero, a decision in Spain widely read as confirmation that negotiations over his departure are already under way.

His name is now bouncing around England, Portugal and Italy. According to Catalan newspaper Sport, the destination that excites Balde most is Old Trafford. United’s interest is real, even if it is still cautious.

Why Balde is ready to go

For months, Balde had insisted he wanted to stay and fight for his place at Barcelona. That stance has shifted. One major factor: Joao Cancelo.

The Portuguese full-back’s presence has squeezed Balde’s minutes and status, turning what was supposed to be a long-term role on the left into a battle he no longer seems convinced he will win. As Cancelo’s influence has grown, Balde’s future has drifted away from Montjuïc.

Sport reports that Barcelona have now opened the door, asking Mendes to actively explore the market. The 22-year-old is no longer being treated as untouchable.

United’s left-back problem

At Old Trafford, the need is obvious. United must sort out their left flank.

Balde fits the profile: young, quick, attack-minded, and already tested at the top level. According to reports, United have already made contact with Mendes to register their interest and understand the conditions of a deal.

But they are not all-in on one name.

A cheaper alternative on the table

The Manchester Evening News notes that Balde is only one of several options United are weighing up. On the same shortlist sits a far cheaper alternative: Jorge Salinas of Racing Santander.

Salinas, a 19-year-old Spanish left-back, has a release clause of around £16 million. That figure is a fraction of what Barcelona want for Balde, and it matters.

The gap in cost explains United’s current stance. They are monitoring Balde, talking to his camp, but have not yet made an official offer. The only concrete bid on the table for the Barça defender so far has come from Benfica, and Sport reports that proposal falls well below the valuation set by the Catalan club.

Aston Villa, for their part, are seen as one of the few sides capable of meeting Barcelona’s demands. They would, however, need to sell a player first to create the financial room required.

Barça’s balancing act

Barcelona’s position is delicate. They need to free up financial margin. That much is clear. But they are determined not to lose a 22-year-old asset for a cut-price fee.

Just a few months ago, the club valued Balde at around €40–45 million. That benchmark has not disappeared, even as they quietly move him towards the exit.

The sporting department has already started looking for a replacement left-back. If Balde leaves, the left side would be left to Cancelo and Gerard Martin. For a team chasing trophies on multiple fronts, that is thin cover.

So the situation hangs in the balance. Barcelona want money and room to manoeuvre. United want a left-back but are wary of overpaying with a cheaper option like Salinas available. Balde wants clarity and a stage worthy of his talent.

Somewhere in that triangle, a decision is coming.
