Alejandro Balde Faces Crucial Decision at Barcelona

Alejandro Balde is heading into a decisive stretch of his Barcelona career. The offers are on the table, the conversations have started, and for the first time it genuinely feels like his time at the club could be running out.

According to Spanish outlet Marca, his agent Jorge Mendes has flown into Barcelona this week to take control of the situation. The Portuguese super-agent met with the club’s sporting director before sitting down with Balde and Marc Casado to spell out the scenarios in front of them. Casado’s exit has been expected for some time. Balde’s, until very recently, had not.

That has changed quickly.

The tension around his future spiked when Barcelona left the Spanish full-back out of the squad to face Elche. No injury, no suspension. Just a glaring omission that looked less like rotation and more like a message. When a young international defender suddenly disappears from a matchday list in late August, everyone inside the dressing room understands what that usually means.

On the player’s side, three concrete offers are in play. Manchester United are pushing hardest and, by all current indications, sit in pole position to sign him. Two other clubs remain in the race, waiting to see whether Barcelona open the door fully and whether Balde is ready to walk through it.

He has not given his final answer yet. The club, for their part, still need to turn conversations into formal negotiations with the interested sides. There is no sense of an exit being completed overnight, but the direction of travel is clear: the expectation is that a decision will land in the coming days, not weeks.

The odds on him staying are shrinking. His absence against Elche feels like a turning point, and the plan to install Joao Cancelo as the starting left-back only hardens that impression. If Cancelo is the chosen man for that flank, Barcelona have far less incentive to hold Balde back from a major move.

If the transfer goes through, the club’s defensive planning will be tested immediately. They would need to decide whether to go back into the market for a new left-back or use the funds and squad space to reinforce at centre-back, a position that has been high on the agenda for some time.

There is also a homegrown route on the table. Should Barcelona decide against signing another full-back, Gerard Martin could be promoted as an internal solution on the left. With the transfer window closing in just nine days, that kind of call cannot be delayed for long.
