Abdukodir Khusanov Signs New Five-Year Deal with Manchester City

Abdukodir Khusanov walked into Manchester as a trailblazer. Now he’s staying as a cornerstone.

The 22-year-old centre-back has signed a new five-year contract at Etihad Stadium, a deal that underlines how quickly he has moved from unknown prospect to trusted defender in one of Europe’s most demanding teams.

He arrived in January 2025 as a piece of history: the first Uzbek player to sign for a Premier League club. He leaves this summer not at all — but with his future tied to City and a growing reputation as one of their most intriguing long-term bets.

“I am really happy to extend my stay at City. I've enjoyed every minute since I arrived in Manchester,” Khusanov said after putting pen to paper. “I feel I am growing and learning a lot as a player.”

Last season, under Pep Guardiola, he played 37 times in all competitions. That is no small feat in a squad stacked with elite defenders and where every mistake is magnified. He didn’t just survive. He contributed.

Khusanov featured in both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup finals at Wembley as City completed a domestic cup double in his first full campaign with the club. The stage was huge, the pressure intense, yet the 22-year-old handled it with the calm of someone far more seasoned.

“I have a new challenge now, which is to impress Enzo Maresca and his staff. I also want to ensure I am in his team regularly. I am determined to do that,” he said. “Thank you to the City fans for all of your support - it has been really important as I have settled in England and the Premier League.

“Now I am only looking forward. I am ready to do everything I can to help this club be as successful as possible.”

Inside the club, the belief in him is clear.

Director of football Hugo Viana did not hold back in his assessment of the defender’s trajectory.

“We are seeing him grow into a brilliant young man and an outstanding defender, but we know this is only the beginning,” Viana said. “His physical and technical abilities are top. He has all the assets needed to be a world-class centre-back.

“At just 22 years old, his best years are all in front of him and his potential to get even better is clear for all to see.”

City have seen enough to commit long term. Khusanov, for his part, has nailed his colours to the mast. The next step is the hardest one: turning potential and promise into an undisputed starting role in a team that expects to win everything, every year.
